Novel epigenetic age estimation in wild-caught Gulf of Mexico reef fishes

چکیده

Cutting-edge DNA methylation-based epigenetic aging techniques were applied to Gulf of Mexico northern red snapper (Lutjanus campechanus; n = 10; 1–26 years old) and grouper (Epinephelus morio; 2–14 old). Bisulfite-converted restriction site-associated sequencing was used identify CpG sites (cytosines followed by guanines) that exhibit age-correlated methylation, species-specific clocks developed from hundreds in each species showed strong agreement between predicted otolith-derived age (r 2 > 0.99 for both species). Results suggest estimation could provide an accurate efficient approach mass-aging fishes a non-invasive manner.

Postrelease Survival of Sailfish Caught by Commercial Pelagic Longline Gear in the Southern Gulf of Mexico

—The biomass levels of several target species of the Atlantic pelagic longline fishery, including various tunas of the genus Thunnus and swordfish Xiphias gladius, are estimated to be close to those required to support the maximum sustainable yield. In contrast, several species captured incidentally are severely depleted. Live release of incidental catch is one means of reducing the fishing mor...

Epigenetic estimation of age in humpback whales

Age is a fundamental aspect of animal ecology, but is difficult to determine in many species. Humpback whales exemplify this as they have a lifespan comparable to humans, mature sexually as early as 4 years and have no reliable visual age indicators after their first year. Current methods for estimating humpback age cannot be applied to all individuals and populations. Assays for human age have...

Occurrence and amount of microplastic ingested by fishes in watersheds of the Gulf of Mexico.

Ingestion of microplastics by fishes could be an emerging environmental crisis because of the proliferation of plastic pollution in aquatic environments. Microplastics in marine ecosystems are well documented, however only one study has reported percent occurrence of microplastics in freshwater fishes. The purpose of this study was to quantify the occurrences and types of microplastics ingested...

Effects of hypoxia on habitat quality of pelagic planktivorous fishes in the northern Gulf of Mexico

To evaluate the impact of hypoxia (<2 mg O2 l−1) on habitat quality of pelagic prey fishes in the northern Gulf of Mexico, we used a spatially explicit, bioenergetics-based growth rate potential (GRP) model to develop indices of habitat quality. Our focus was on the pelagic bay anchovy Anchoa mitchilli and Gulf menhaden Brevoortia patronus. Positive GRP was considered high-quality habitat (HQH)...

Environmental Extremes Are Associated with Dietary Patterns in Arabian Gulf Reef Fishes

Climate change is affecting the trophic ecology of reef fishes through changes in reef-associated food availability and fish feeding behavior. The southern Arabian Gulf is a thermally extreme environment, providing an opportunity to study fish diets on reefs with summer temperatures representative of next-century conditions elsewhere. Using 18S metagenomic analyses of stomach contents, we provi...
